Professor Humayun Mughal - CEO

Humayun Mughal – Founder and Chief Executive Officer. Graduating in electronics from Liverpool University, Humayun started his successful career as a research engineer for ITT Components Group prior to creating Akhter in 1979. He is responsible for the overall control and direction of the business and has been instrumental in Akhter’s ability to always be an early adopter of new technologies and support services throughout the company’s history.

A visiting professor at Liverpool University Humayun is also a renowned public speaker and advocate of Renewable Energy resources. 1999 saw him appointed as Chairman & CEO of Ultima Networks plc; The foundation of Silicon CPV plc (Research & Development Facility) and the creation of a manufacturing facility for solar panels.

The technological advancements through Silicon CPV’s research facility coupled with collaborative research with University of Southampton (Nano Technology Centre), Imperial College, Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems & Al Akhawayn University (Morocco) have resulted in increased silicon solar cell efficiencies and solar concentrator designs targeted at increasing the efficiencies of solar parks.



Alan Laffoley - Group Technical Director

Alan Laffoley joined Akhter in 1983 having previously worked with STC Electronics Services for 12 years as Senior Research Engineer. He was appointed to the Board in 1985 and is responsible for all development and technical aspects of Akhter products. Alan is a qualified Prince2 project manager and takes technical lead for Akhter’s major projects bringing a wealth of experience to the timely delivery of major client designs and installations.

Alan is also credited with Akhter’s successful position in the Information Assurance market having been the prime mover in the company’s accreditation as an approved supplier for the provision of encryption products and services to the MoD and Central Government Departments throughout the UK. (Alan is cleared to Defence Vetting Agency SC level).



John Oakley - Group Sales & Projects Director

John Oakley joined Akhter from Charrington’s in 1983 as a sales executive. He was made a divisional director in 1991 and appointed to the board of Akhter Computers in 1996 with responsibility for MoD and Central Government sales. John now spearheads the Groups sales & projects activities.

John was instrumental in both introducing Akhter to the MoD and successfully bidding for Akhter’s first Defence enabling agreement in the early 90’s, a position the company has maintained continuously since that time. In 2009 John extended the company’s sphere of operation to include the Ministry of Justice as a major client, delivering the infrastructure and IT security for the Baha Mousa Public Inquiry which is credited with being the first “All Electronic” court in the UK. (John is cleared to Defence Vetting Agency SC level).
